Maceo (The Dillinger Chronicles) by Kimberly Brown

Y’all, Maceo had me hooked from start to finish! After reading Deuce, I was excited to jump into this next book of The Dillinger Chronicles, and let me tell you Kimberly Brown did not disappoint!

Maceo was that man protective, loving, and willing to do whatever it took to keep his family and his woman Shar safe. But whew, his insecurities about his position in the family business led him to make a reckless decision that put everyone in jeopardy. And listen, there were moments when I wanted to shake him for not listening to Shar because sis knew what she was talking about. But at the end of the day, Maceo’s heart was in the right place, and his love for Shar was undeniable.

Speaking of Shar, she and Maceo just worked. Their chemistry was effortless, and she was riding for him in every way. These two were really on some Bonnie & Clyde mess. Maceo might have been the one calling shots, but Shar was holding it down and standing beside him. She was literally the meaning of “that’s my man and imma stick beside him.”

One thing about Kimberly Brown is she’s going to give us strong side characters that add to the story. The banter between Maceo, Smoke, and their little sister Deja was hilarious. Those brothers STAY on Deja’s case, which had me laughing, they need to chill out on her for real…LOL. The part where they go up to her room to see about this friend she had in her room had me cackling, okay! Their sibling dynamic felt so real, making me appreciate the family bond even more.

Now let’s talk about Charity. She irked my nerves to no end. It took WAY too long for them to handle her, and I was getting impatient because she was doing the absolute most. I don’t think she really understood who she was messing with, but she found out. He said “You know what our family motto is, Charity? ‘Revenge is an act of passion; vengeance is an act of justice.’ Today, justice is mine.” Whew, she found out that day.

This story was all about Maceo making a move that put his family and friends in danger, then having to do whatever it took to fix it with his family’s help of course. The stakes were high, and the tension was real. I really enjoyed Maceo’s story and how everything played out even though some of those twists had me stressed!

Final Thoughts

Maceo had me in my feelings, frustrated at times (sir, LISTEN TO YOUR WOMAN!), but completely invested in his journey. If you love protective yet flawed male leads, strong family bonds, a romance that balances softness with intensity, and a heroine who truly holds her man down, this book is for you. Kimberly Brown continues to deliver with The Dillinger Chronicles, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
